In a significant move to combat examination-related fraud, the Indian government has imposed a temporary ban on the messaging platform Telegram. This restriction will remain in effect until June 22, coinciding with the retest of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), a crucial medical college entrance examination. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued this directive following recommendations from the National Testing Agency (NTA).

The ban is part of a broader strategy to address concerns over cheating and paper leaks that have plagued the examination system. Authorities have noted that Telegram has been used by organized cheating networks to defraud candidates, prompting the need for such drastic measures. Additionally, Telegram has been instructed to disable its message-editing feature in India until the end of June. The measure on Telegram was taken "in response to the organized use of the platform by cheating ​rackets to defraud candidates appearing for the NEET 2026 re-examination scheduled on 21 June 2026,"

The decision to block Telegram comes in the wake of a scandal involving a leak of the NEET question paper last month. This incident not only led to the cancellation of the exam but also sparked significant public outrage, culminating in protests demanding accountability from the education authorities. The situation was exacerbated by a separate marking fiasco in high school tests, further fueling discontent among students and their families.

In response to the growing unrest, a satirical political movement known as the 'Cockroach Janta Party' emerged, mocking the government's handling of the education system. This group has gained considerable traction on social media, reflecting the frustrations of the youth who feel marginalized by the current administration's policies. The failure of the hugely competitive exam, along with a separate marking fiasco in high school tests, sparked outrage and fuelled youth protests demanding the education minister's resignation.

As the NEET re-examination approaches, the implications of this ban on Telegram could be significant. Authorities are taking extensive measures to ensure the integrity of the examination process, including deploying helicopters to deliver test papers securely. This heightened security reflects the government's commitment to restoring trust in the examination system, which has been severely undermined by recent events.
